A lot of older ppl I know who grew up in the 70’s (were in high school or pre-teens then) seem to know how to play bass, drums, the keyboard/piano & some even the sax. I know some kids like college bands but so many seem disinterested. Not even the turntables & scratching seem as popular as it was in the 90’s.

they need better role models.
I think there are more distractions (internet, iPods, etc.) than in the 70s and 80s. Also, inner city kids go to schools who have less funding for music programs-thus depleting their chances of learning an instrument. A shame really.
true….sadly, school districts lack funding to have good music programs anymore…… And learning to play an instrument is a valuable thing that stays with you for life… turntables and scratching can’t even be put into the same category…
Because they are too spoiled now a days and have to many gadgets that do everything for them,i mean, come on,a caculater i was told i had to buy for my kids for math when they were in secound grade, how the hell do teacher,s think their minds are going to learn when they have machines that do all the work for them,i remember when caclaters first came out,we we not allowed to have them in school, the teachers said it was cheating and ya,s don,t use ya minds to learn, well they were right, look at kids today!!!!hollywood
Because kids are not taught that learning a musical instrument is a worthwhile investment. They are not taught that music can help them financially. They are not taught that learning an instrument is important. Let the inner city kids in my house for 1/2 hour and they will change their minds.
Because in most poor school system/district, the option isn’t there…
If you are not expose to something, how can you become interested in it….??
They arent given a chance to even experiment with one.
I grew up in the city (Philly) for a number of years, and I actually played two instruments (the violin & piano). And one of those instruments was introduced to me by the public school system. And the other by my grandmother who plays the piano. But I would have to say that funds is a very big part of it.Out of my whole elementary school (about 500 or 600) only 7 of us played instruments (provided by the School District). Now, I lived in Southwest Philly at the time and this was during the 90’s, when the poverty rate was ridiculous (still is) and I realized that a good number of people could not pay for instruments.Because they were either on public assistance or were literally struggling to make it from a day to day basis. It is very expensive, but it also depends on what instrument you play. But even if pepole were able to purchase one the maintenence can hurt also your pockets.
I believe that if they are given a chance like I was. There is no telling what they will be capable of. All those children need is a chance. But like Atia said if you are no exposed to it then you really can not become interested with it.
I lived in the inner city, and we had to play the violin. Now, we hated it, It wasn’t snoop, we couldn’t play mo’ money mo’ problems, so we weren’t having it.
My teacher was strict, and wasn’t budging, we would have to play the rock song, theme from cannon in D and This Irish song that I cant remember. But, after having the heart, he taught us how to play gangsters paradise (Coolio) LOL.
Now that I’m older I wish we’d learned more classical stuff. I think its because the music they teach you has to be balanced, My piano teacher did the same, I learned My heart will go on (Celine Dione) and Don’t leave (black street) in addition to Fur Elise.
You cant conform ppl…. even children!
Everything is electronic these days, so I really don’t believe any kids are as interested in musical instruments as they used to be because of that. Why learn to play an instrument when you can generate the same sound by pressing a button? It is a culture, rather than class, issue, imo.
