The birth of Jesus was NOT celebrated before his birth, nor was it likely celebrated before his death.

kumorifox November 28, 2009 at 4:21 pm

The Roman festival of Saturnalia was replaced with Christmas.

Gordon freeman November 28, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Yes it the modern day Christmas draws from many souses, mainly the pagan holiday yule.

But “Christmas” was not calibrated then just other various holidays, Yule being the main one.

Christmas originated as a Christian replacement for various pagan winter festivals that were popular at the time.

Mythos November 28, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I just told you in your last question about Christmas.

It’s Babylonian in origin, and has a rather bloody history.

The story of the “red and green” tree is rather gruesome, yet Christians the world over insist on celebrating this godless ritual every 25th of December.

Kip R November 28, 2009 at 9:58 pm

December 25 is also HORUS birthday which precede Christianity by 3000years

Chrishna, of India, born on December 25

Mithra, of Persia, born on December 25

Buddha, of India, born on December 25

Many Christian holidays are derived from Pagan holidays.

Just a man made Holiday and it was reason for partying during the winter …since the winter was long

Its the concept of tradition. Many of us celebrate traditions without even really knowing what started it.

One story I can offer is about a married couple preparing their first meal together. The wife cuts the top of the ham off, a perfectly good chunk of meat, and throws it away before putting the ham in the large cooking dish. The husband asks her why she would do such a thing, and she responds “Because my mother always prepared it this way.” He asks her to find out why, so the next day she goes to her mother and asks “Mom, why do you cut the top of the ham off before cooking it?” Mother responds “because that’s how my mother always prepared it.” So they both go to the grandmother’s house to ask her. When asked, she responds “oh that? I only did that because our cooking dish was too small to fit the whole ham.”

The idea behind this is people follow tradition blindly. It’s a fact of life, and i personally believe everyone is guilty of it. Christmas exists still because we choose to follow the tradition, and because at a young age such fond memories were instilled in us by Christmas. Who doesn’t like getting free gifts?

You mean Yule was. Thy would it be Christmas? heck i am an atheist but Christmas has to do with CHRIST… gg fail.

Christmas was not celebrated before Jesus was born. many of the things we do on christmas such as decorating trees are from merged pagan religions that merged when they excepted Jesus but didn’t completely get rid of their traditions

Heidelzbth November 29, 2009 at 12:15 am

Christmas originated from the Pagans, they celebrated Yule. All of the decorations, Christmas Trees, Stars on top, Yule log etc is all Pagan. It is celebrated in December because of solstice. Christians adopted many of the traditions to ease the converted pagans over to Christianity. If you look back there have been over 15 “Savior” type people in all religions born to a virgin on the 25 of December. They all have the same typical surrounds (12 apostles) etc. But it is all astrological.
Christmas has now since become a halmark holiday, and most people do not even know the true origin. It is sad that Christians have claimed the holiday as their own, but historically it is not theirs to claim

The traditions are based on pagan celebrations.

Rod B November 29, 2009 at 1:15 am

The celebration of Yule had been going on for thousands of years before Jesus was ever thought about. It is a celebration of the winter solstice and many of the Christmas traditions came directly from that heritage.

Christian monks disallowed the pagan celebrations, but to keep the people from rebelling, changed their Pagan celebration into one to honor the Christian “god”.

Christianity really has no tradition of their own.

Satan keeps it going. Yes, it is beautiful and a fun time of year but if it was not how many would celebrate it? Satan does not lure us with ugly things. He appeals to our emotions and nostalgia.

Many will say that Christmas began during the Roman rule. Celebrating to the sun God. But it actually began much earlier. With Nimrod’s wife. Nimrod was born on Dec 25th. Every year after he died and on his birthday his wife would place gifts under an evergreen tree. Ancient Babylon was the center of all languages and also false worship. The people who scattered after God confused their languages brought along all the pagan teachings of Babylon. Trinity, hellfire, immortal soul to name a few.

Catholics keep it going. The church in Rome chose the date for Christmas (nothing to do with pagans). The customs associated with it are either pre-reformation Catholic customs such as:

Santa Claus – Saint Nicholas, a Christian Saint, a bishop.
Christmas Tree – the tree from Eden used in Medieval mystery plays.

Or more modern or of unknown origin.
There is no historical evidence that anything about it is pagan.

Yule – simply Scandinavian word for winter. Many Scandinavians had a winter feast – particularly the nobility who needed to keep their warrior followers happy and well fed – but not particularly at Christmas time – just as often in mid January and with no known great religious significance. Pre-Christian references to these feasts (before say 900AD) do not exist so there is no way of knowing how old the tradition was.

The Christan Christmas is documented from much earlier
