Where can I find a free play script of The Wizard of Oz?

by admin on November 24, 2009

I’m looking for a great play for my middle school students. The Wizard of Oz might be what I’m looking for, but I can’t find a play script anywhere. Everywhere I look, I find the script for the MGM movie. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I doubt you’ll find a free online copy of it. There are copyright issues, the copyright holders should be paid for it. That being said, here are two websites to look at.

You might be able to write your own script with help from the above website. Get a copy of Baum’s novel and you can write the script.

You may be able to buy a copy from this website. I searched “wizard of oz” and found many results, quite a few of which were less than $10.

Tams-Witmark (www.tams-witmark.com) are the rights-holders for both versions of The Wizard of Oz. If you’re wanting to do the musical, you’ll need to get the rights from them and they’ll send you scripts. You could write your own version from the original book (presuming it’s out of copyright, which I think it is as L. Frank Baum has been dead for more than 50 years), but if you want to do the musical you’ll have to pay for rights. There are two versions of the musical, the MUNY version which is closer to the original book, and the RSC version which is almost identical to the movie. I’ve done both versions and prefer the RSC version, although it’s harder to stage and requires more technical and set resources. Both versions include the big famous songs – ie “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “If I Only Had A Heart/Brain/Nerve) but the storylines vary slightly, Glinda is unnamed in the MUNY version and Toto isn’t in the MUNY version at all.
